From Our Principal
Dear Parents,

Happy Valentine's Day!! I want to thank everyone that joined us for math night. It was a night filled with math games and fun. We hope you continue to enjoy playing these games at home with your family.

I also want to thank everyone for helping us compete for the Dannon playground makeover and the $10,000 School Spirit Award. While we did not win either one, we did show enthusiasm and great effort. Parkview High School won first place with 580,000 votes. Roberts Elementary came is second with approximately 85,000 votes and Grayson Elementary came in a close third with 78,000 votes. Now that is a LOT of votes and mouse clicks! Thank you for your support and hard work. Hopefully next year we will win!!

We look forward to seeing you later this month for Parent Teacher Conferences.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our students!

The bulletin board located in the front lobby of the school highlights some of the famous past and present African American politicians, athletes and entertainers. Stop by during the month of February to check it out.

    Science Update

Happy New Year from the science room! We are as busy as ever! Thank you parents for all your support throughout the year. I surely want to thank all the children and parents for Christmas cards, Christmas gifts and Christmas well wishes. I sent out thank you notes, but I know I probably missed someone out there. I really appreciate you thinking about me. I love being your science teacher.

Kindergarten parents be looking for a letter about finding a soil sample at home. The first graders are working with light and sound. This week we made shadow puppets and had fun experimenting with making our shadows bigger and smaller. Soon we will make instruments with recycled containers of all shapes and sizes. If you have any empty coffee cans, butter bowls, icing containers with lids, etc., we can use them. If you have any popsicle sticks you could donate for future shadow puppets, it would be greatly appreciated. Second graders made a model of the solar system using sport balls - it was great fun. Earth was a tennis ball. We compared our model with the "real" solar system. Third grade is learning about fossils telling us about the past. I have a collection of real fossils that we have enjoyed looking at. This week we played a game about digging up fossils on a National Geographic website. The kids had a blast with that. Fourth graders have been introduced to simple machines. We have had centers where we experimented with simple machines at each of the different centers. This week we made whirly birds that had different wingspans and we compared the "time of flight" with those. A whirly bird is a type of screw. A screw is one of the simple machines. Can you name the six simple machines? I hope your fourth grader can. Fifth grade is working with physical and chemical changes. Did you know you can cut a regular piece of xerox paper in a way that a large man can walk through it? You can only use scissors and a piece of paper. It's an extreme physical change...........and challenging too. Try it...............

Jenny Lloyd and I will be representing our school at the Clean and Beautiful meeting in February. We do a great job here with our recycling efforts! Keep up the good work everyone.

In the science room, we can always use shells, old keys, old magazines, old spools, ziplock bags, santizing wipes, size D batteries, and tons of treasures for the treasure box!!!! One man's trash is another man's treasure, right??? Thanks for a great 2012.
